March Classroom News:
Language Arts: Our reading focus this month is learning how to describe story elements (characters, setting, problem & solution) and to begin to make inferences. Inferences are made based on what readers SEE, READ and UNDERSTAND. We will practice making inferences based on what we know and explaining WHY we think something will or will not happen in a story or text. We continue to compare fiction and non-fiction stories. With non-fiction texts, your child is learning to use headings, captions, bold-faced words and other text features to learn more about things. Please encourage your child to tell you about the persuasive writing we did in class! We are still working on writing a strong paragraph to show our opinion using OREO.
Math: We are moving into Unit 7: Number Sense and Computation which focuses heavily on PLACE VALUE. Students are working with 3 digit numbers (into the hundreds) and identifying the VALUE of each digit. We will begin addition and subtraction with and without regrouping! This is a BIG concept for 2nd graders. We'll look at how to regroup 10 ones into a new ten or "borrowing" from the tens to give to the ones! Lots and lots of practice will be important to master this concept.
Teacher's Note: Interims will be coming home SOON! We hope you and your family are able to make it out for our Scholastic Book Fair.
