Thank you for attending our START Family Night! The kids did a great job showing off their work. It was nice to see many of you that I don't get to see on a regular basis.
Welcome to the 2016-1017 school year!
What's happening in START?
1st graders have concluded the Engineering unit, "Catching the Wind." Through this unit we learned about the work of mechanical engineers and how wind power can be used to create energy. Ask your child about the windmill blades he/she designed. They all had great success and learned about the importance of shape, size and materials for creating strong windmill blades. For the remainder of the school year, we will study "Wacky World of Words," a language enrichment unit from William and Mary. The students will have many opportunities to play with words and learn about different language systems.
2nd graders in START are also studying mechanical engineering and wind energy through the "Catching the Wind" unit. Students are currently designing "sails" to test which materials will catch the wind. Throughout this last semester, we will also tie in some math activities from the Algebra Unknown unit.
3rd graders in START have completed their final projects for the "Cultural Kaleidoscopes" unit. During the last semester, we will study the work of Civil Engineers through an engineering unit on bridge design. We will continue to work in our Creativity Journal and participate in math challenges during our START classes.
